As we journey through the seasons here in our beautiful corner of the UK, each one brings its own charm and, well, a few uninvited guests. I’m talking about those seasonal pests that seem to have their own calendar invites to our homes. Let’s have a chat about what you might expect as the year unfolds, and how we can stay one step ahead.
Spring’s First Stirrings (March – May)
Spring is a breath of fresh air, literally and figuratively, but it also wakes up some of our smaller neighbours. Moths start eyeing up your wardrobes and pantry, and ants begin their quest for a sugary treat or two. Keeping things clean and your foods tightly sealed will go a long way in keeping these critters at bay.
The Summer Buzz (June – August)
Ah, summer, with its long days and warm nights, also brings the buzz and hum of pests like bees, wasps, and mosquitoes, not to mention the increased activity of ants and cockroaches. While bees and wasps are vital for the environment, their nests might not be best placed next to your window or under the eaves. And as for mosquitoes, standing water is their favourite breeding ground, so let’s not make it easy for them, eh?
Autumn’s Gatherers (September – November)
When the leaves start to turn, some pests look for cozy winter accommodations. Bed bugs might hitch a ride inside without you knowing, and squirrels see your attic as the perfect winter let. It’s a good time to check your luggage after a trip and ensure your attic’s not the Ritz for these unwanted visitors.
Winter’s Unwelcome Warmth Seekers (December – February)
With the cold snap comes the search for warmth, leading mice and rats to our doorsteps. They’re not just after shelter but any crumbs we’ve left behind. A tidy home and sealed entry points make for a strong defence against these resourceful intruders.
All-Year Vigilance
Some pests don’t quite care what month it is; cockroaches and bed bugs are as happy in December as they are in July, thanks to our warm homes. It pays to keep an eye out year-round and deal with any signs of these persistent pests promptly.
